Bruce Springsteen’s New Album Features Samples of Alan Lomax’s Field Recordings

Bruce Springsteen’s newest album, Wrecking Ball, features two songs recorded by Alan Lomax. The first, “Rocky Ground” samples “I’m A Soldier in the Army of the Lord” by the Church of God in Christ Congregation, a recording that Alan made in 1942–you can see the video for “Rocky Ground” here. On “Death to My Hometown,” pieces of the Alabama Sacred Heart Choir’s “The Last Words of Copernicus,” recorded by Alan Lomax in 1959, shine through.
