"Ai-La-Lai-La" from Galicia Grade Level: 3–5Cantar de Vendima (Grape tramping song) — Group of singers, Ourense [Audio coming soon] Return to All Lessons Lesson Plans
Activity #1: Form 1. Listen to Cantar de Vendima and identify the "ai-la-lai-la" section as a repeated refrain. Identify this as similar to singing "fa la la" in English 2. Listen again to determine that the song is structured as follows: A = group of men singing verse in unison B = men and women repeating and extending verse in harmony C = refrain in unison 3. Listen for the form, learn and join in singing on the refrain Activity #2: Melodic Composition 1. Listen to Cantar de Vendima and sing the refrain "ai-la-lai-la" as it occurs. 2. Determine that the piece is in major and uses all the notes of a major scale (do &emdash; high do) 3. Using pitched percussion such as xylophones work in small groups to compose 8 bars of three meter. In addition to metrical patterns the students might know, the only guideline would be to have the piece end on "do" in order for it to sound finished in major. Choose one student in each group to act as "recorder" to notate or in some way record the composition so that it can be recalled later. 4. Take turns performing the 8 bar compositions for each other, with everyone singing the refrain "ai-la-lai-la" between each composition. Cultural Link Spain: GaliciaDesigned by Rita Klinger |
